20
Q

As soon as the patient is accessible and the surrounding area is safe, the Rescue Paramedic MUST start patient care. If the patient has been pinned for more than 1 hour or appears to have suffered serious injuries the medic needs to have access to treat for?

A

CRUSH Syndrome or other life threatening injuries. This syndrome is also known as “Traumatic Rhabdomyloysis”
AKA “smiling death”
The entire victim does not have to be exposed.
This results from prolonged compression (usually 4-6 hrs)

21
Q

Victim removal leader will normally be the rescue company officer until relieved by the rescue battalion. The street coordination manager would be staffed by?

A

A company officer

22
Q

Additional safety precautions required at collapse operations are outlined in the acronym LCES. Whats does it stand for?

A

LOOKOUTS
COMMUNICATION
ESCAPE ROUTES
SAFE HAVENS

23
Q

What is the emergency signaling system used by all FEMA USAR task force that was adopted by FDNY to be used at collapse operations?

A

1 Long blast Cease operations
3 short blasts Evacuate
1 long and short blast Resume operations

24
Q

Con edison vacuum trucks are extremely valuable pieces of equipment under the right circumstances. Due to the extreme suction they create they can be dangerous to the persons who operate near their inlets. Who may use this equipment?

A

SOC Members in conjunction with Con Ed operators and the direction of the IC

25
Q

Collapse PODS contain no tools and their response can only be ordered by whom?

A

Command Chief

26
Q

The 5 stages of collapse rescue operations are?

A
RASS G
Recon
Accounting for and removal of victims
Search of voids
Select debris removal
General debris removal
27
Q

After completing the recon phase os simultaneously, if conditions and personnel permit, start the removal of victims who are?

A

Lightly pinned

28
Q

Immediately designate an officer to keep track of all persons who are removed from the debris. The member designated to obtain vicim information is called?

A

Victim Accounting Manager.

He or she should make not of injuries,if transport was involved, to where and by whom

29
Q

Surrounding buildings should be examined for the presence of surveillance cameras that may have captured the collapse. Who should be delegated the task to view these recordings to determine if a passerby was caught in the collapse on the sidewalk or in the street in front of the collapse site?

A

Fire Marshals or a Battalion to each location

30
Q

Lean-to-voids result from the failure of the support at one end of a floor or roof. If one bearing wall gives way while the other remains intact, the floor will drop at the end that failed. There is a excellent chance for survival for persons who were on the floor below if they were located where?

A

Near the remaining wall on the floor below.
Lean-to collapses produce large voids that may contain survivors. An unsupported lean-to is extremely dangerous and must be supported early

31
Q

V shaped voids result when the floor fails in the middle, usually a result of overloading or a part of the floor is burned away and under a load. Victims Below will have the _____ chance of survival while those along the perimeter will have the _____ chance.

A

Least…..Greatest

32
Q

Searching of void spaces should be done immediately after the surface victims have been removed, or simulaneously if sufficient personnel are available. Individual void spaces may be found in what type of collapse?

A

ANY!!!!! They are hard to locate, for they occur at random depanding on the layout of partitions and furniture.

33
Q

In a fire related collapse, fire will try to fill these same void spaces. The survival of the victims depends on reaching them first, preferably with a hoseline. Trapped victims should be provided?

A

A spare SCBA or the FAST-PAK. (Conflict see SCBA add1 Sect 7.1 fast pak for FF’s only)

34
Q

Locating a victim in a collapse can be located within a vois or debris pile by calling out within voids and listening for a reply. If a voice is heard it may be dificult to locate the source since the debris can distort the sound. What method may useful in this situation?

A

“Around the clock method” (Triagulate the position of the trapped person)
Electronic listening devices are also used to locate trapped victims however they are not practical during the initial stages for there is too much activity. Non trainded/certified dogs are not reliable and should not be used for this purpose.

35
Q

During the select debris and removal phase the victim removal leader directs the victim removal activities that can be accomplished by shoveling, hand digging, or the cutting of NON BEARING structural members. Who would you expect to fill this roll?

A

Rescue Battalion. The select debris removal phase begins whan all voids have been searched and people are still unaccounted for. This is not a useful tactic if we have no idea where the victims are located.

36
Q

Only collapse trained members of SOC units are to perform tunneling or trenching involving the cutting of potentially load bearing structural members. The recommended work time for these members is?

A

30 minutes.

37
Q

If the victim has been pinned for more than ____or appears to have suffered serious injuries. A rescue medic MUST be given access to the patient as soon as there is access, in order to treat for crush syndrome or other life threatening injuries.

A

1 Hour.

38
Q

General Debris removal is begun when?

A

It is CERTAIN there are no other survivors.

Heavy demo equipment is FORBIDDEN during the select debris removal stage.

39
Q

Fire department presence in the form of a watchline shall be maintained as long as ?

A

There are peronnel operating in the debris pile for search and investigative purposes.

40
Q

Survival for as long as 14 days has been documented in earthquakes around the world. Do not proceed to the General Removal Phase until?

A

All means of searching for survivors have been exhausted or all occupants and visitors have been accounted for.

41
Q

Search assessment markings are 2’x2’ and when complete will form the letter “X” with designated markings in each quadrant. These marks are made using the same lime-yellow colored reflective paint currently used to mark vacant buildings. How many cans of this paint must be carried on ALL apparatus?

A

2

42
Q

A single slash and the unit identity are marked upon entry. The second crossing slash shall be drawn when?

A

When ALL personnel exit the structure or area

43
Q

The LEFT quadrant will indicate the company or team designation given at the command post. The TOP quadrant will indicate what?

A

The time and date the company/team LEFT the structure or area

44
Q

The RIGHT quadrant indicates the Personal hazards to units/teams. What should be indicated in the bottom quadrant?

A

of live and or expired victims still inside the structure/area.

Previous markings should be crossed out and a new marking placed next to it with the most recent information.

45
Q

Units conducting searches, upon discovery of a known or potential victim, shall use the victim marking system to denote their location. A large “V” ~2’ in height is painted near the location of a KNOWN or POTENTIAL victim. An arrow may be used to point towards the victims location if not clearly visible. What does a circle around the “V” indicate?

A

The location of a potential victim is CONFIRMED either visually, vocally, or by hearing

46
Q

Paint a horizontal line thru the middle of the “V” when the victim is CONFIRMED DECEASED. Painting a vertical line thru the confirmed victim mark indicates?

A

The victim has been removed.
This marking should not be taken to mean that the secondary search is complete, rather it means that all victims that have been previously been located have been removed

47
Q

The Con Edison truck has a capacity of 10 yards and can move wet or dry material. It uses 8” tubing that can be connected up to 150 ft. 4” tubing can be added for another 50 feet. A Con Ed employee will operate the vacuum truck if the work area is safe and a FDNY member with a HT will be positioned with the Con Ed employee at all times. Who operates the suction hose and what equipment must be dispatched with the vacuum truck?

A

A FDNY member will operate the suction hose and the SOC compressor unit MUST be assigned to the box with the vacuum truck.

48
Q

The 9 types of collapses are?

A
Lean Over
Inward/Outward
Curtain Wall
Ninety degree wall
Pancake Floor
Lean-to
Tent Floor
V Shaped Floor
Secondary
