Colic definition
A
Spasmodic pains in the abdomen relating to the colon, in young infants paroxysms of GI pain with crying and irritability due to a varietyof causes such as swallowing of air, emotional upset, overfeeding, or unknown cause

A
- crying more than 3 hours per day
- 3 days per week
- for more than 3 weeks

Rome III criteria for colic
A
- paroxysms of irritability, fussing, or crying that starts and stops without obvious cause
- episodes lasting 3 hours or greater a day, 3 days a week, or greater than 1 week
- ABSENCE of failure to thrive

Colic - when does it begin and how long does it continue? What pattern occurs with it? Does coddling help? Are they unhealthy?
A
- most begin within first 3 weeks of life
- can continue up to 12 weeks or longer
- predictable, appears approx the same time each day, usually in late afternoon or early evening
- coddling doesn’t help
- no, typically in good health

colic treatment options (6) and which one doesn’t work? (1)
A
- rule out other causes (infection, hairs arounde extremities, etc)
- alternative caregiver and support if parents can’t cope
- rocking child or using swing
- elimination of cruciferous veggies from breast feeding mother’s diet
- changing formula in some cases
- herbal teas
- NO evidence either simethicone or dicyclomine (IBS prescription drug) work

Things to worry about in colic babies (5)
A
- infant cries more than 3 hours or is unusually intense
- has never happened before or been checked by doctor
- pain or fever
- vomitting or diarrhea
- parental abuse
