symptoms of a cold
runny nose, sneezing, congestion, cough, watery eyes, headache, fever, fatigue
referral criteria of a cold
wheezing, sore throat after 3 days, rash, pain on breathing or coughing, ear ache, bloody mucus, headache in children (meningitis), shortness of breath, a dry cough at night and productive cough at night and a cough worsened by exercise.
theory of a decongestant
belongs to class called sympathomimetics. narrows blood vessels to reduce inflammation in the nasal membrane to reduce congestion.
side effects of pseudoephedrine and phenlyephrine
increase in blood sugar levels, increased heart rate and muscle tremors.

heart problems, high blood pressure, overactive thyroid, diabetics, other medications, closed angle glaucoma.
legalities of pseudoephedrine and ephedrine
pack sizes are restricted to 720mg (12 tabs) or 180mg of ephedrine per customer. should not be taken for longer than a week.
forms of xylometazoline and oxymetazoline
topically through nose drops and sprays. no more than 7 days use
side effects of xylometazoline and oxymetazoline
rebound congestion, increase in heart rate, distrubance of sleep.
