Cold Water Storage Systems Flashcards
2 types of water supply in the uk
-Water supplied by the authority known as the water undertaker
- water supplied from a private source such as borehole, river or stream
3 types of unwholesome water
Grey water- waste water from baths, showers, washing machines, dishwashers and sinks
Rainwater harvesting - saves a large volume on mains water
- can be used to flush toilets, water gardens and feed washing machines
-beneath ground in underground storage cistern or on roof
Black water- effluent from WCs and kitchen sinks
Can be treated only by the water undertaker at a sewage works
Brass ferrule
Connection for the water supply to the dwelling
Type of a shut off valve that allows water supply connection to be isolated
Responsible for the undertaker
Communication pipe
Maintained by water undertaker up to boundary stop tap
Service pipe
Pipe maintained by building owner after the boundary stop tap
Cold main Pipe must be between what measurements to the floor
Between 750mm minimum to 1350 max
Water meters must be fitted
Inside dwelling
Must be fitted between two stop taps with a drain off valve after the meter but before the stop tap
Direct cold water system
-All cold taps are fed from the mains supply
-most common
- relatively high pressure of supply available from mains
- storage only required for supplying cold water to the hot water cylinder
-
Indirect system
Cold main feeds the outlets indirectly via a cold water storage cistern
Connects to cistern in rood space
Sink is only directly fed by mains
Boosted cold water systems
For multi storey buildings
Too tall to be supplied with the pressure off the cold water main
Pumps are controlled by a float switch device situated in the high level cistern
When the water drops to about half the cistern capacity the pumps will be activated
