What was the Potsdam conference?
The big three met in Potsdam, Germany where they discussed how Germany and Berlin would be divided after the war.
What was the Yalta conference?
The big three met in a Russian town to discuss end-of-war things and Stalin said he would give Poland and Eastern Europe free elections, but this never happens. Germany gets split up into four zones.
What year was the United Nations formed?
Oct 24, 1945
What was the first test of the United Nations
North Korea trying to invade South Korea to make them all communists.
What exactly was the Munich analogy?
We won’t appease stalin because that didn’t work during WW1.
What was the iron curtain speech?
A speech given by Winston Churchill that is warning the US about Stalin and Stalin considers it an act of war.
What was important about Geroge Kennan’s long telegram?
It basically said that communism can’t make an adjustment and will eventually self-destruct. It was 8,000 words and so persuasive we made a foreign policy from it.
Who was George Kennan?
Person who wrote the long telegram and an expert on soviet conduct.
How did the US eventually contain communism?
Through diplomatic, economic, and military counterpressure. (NATO, Truman plan)
What did the Truman doctrine state?
We will support any free people who are resisting pressures (communist pressures). We will give them money and prevent them from going communist.
What are the first two countries we help with the Truman Doctrine?
Greece and Turkey
Who was George Marshall?
Secretary of State who proposed Marshall plan
What was the Marshall plan?
Any country who needed economic assistance should just ask for it and we will provide it.
What was the difference between the Truman and Marshall plans?
Truman’s plan directly attacked the Soviet menace and called them out, but the Marshall plan just benefited the hurting nations without calling out the Soviets.
How did the Soviets respond to the Marshall plan?
The Soviets responded to the marshall plan with COMECON, Council of Mutual Economic Assistance) basically involving moving industrial factories to suppress someone.
