Yalta Conference
Roosevelt, Stalin, Churchill attended the meeting. in was agreed that the soviet union would join the fight with America against the Japanese when the Germans were defeated
Potsdam Conference
Truman, Stalin, Churchill, and Attlee attended. Truman was willing to stand up to the USSR and didn’t allow the USSR to join them in fighting the Japanese
long telegram
sent by George Kennan the USA’s deputy chief of mission and is the US’ ambassador in Moscow this was was his views on the communist system and how the USA was dealing with it this ended up creating the policy of containment
Novikov telegram
when the Russian representative in the USA for the USSR sent a telegram to Moscow saying that the American can’t be trusted
satellite states
countries west of the soviet union but still controlled by the soviet union as they didn’t allow many elections and the elections that took place were rigged this was so they didn’t become capitalist and destroy the eastern buffer zone
eastern bloc
countries controlled by the soviet union on the western borders to stop enemies ever invading Russia again
iron curtain
a speech was given by Churchill in which he said “an iron curtain has descended upon Europe” between the soviet union and the rest of Europe

a weapon of mass destruction which had already been demonstrated by the USA in WWII at Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Churchill excepted the sphere of influence of the soviet union in the east and wrote down the percentage of influence the west would have in country and east would have

the plan by America to give money to all the European countries so that after WWII they would not fall to communism but the USSR’s satellite states refused the money
berlin blockade
when Stalin ordered all transport and deliveries to the west of Berlin to be halted so the west would starve and have to turn to communism
berlin airlift
when Stalin blocked the west of Berlin of transport the US airdropped food to the west so they could continue with their lives this also led to Stalin ending the blockade after 9 months

the currency in the west so that the west could start developing an economy
Ostmark
east Germany’s currency created to rival the Deutschmark but was inferior as it was fueled by communism which was less effective than capitalism

The alliance between Britain, USA and the USSR this was created in response to the treat that Germany was becoming and the invasion of the USSR In June 1941
Truman doctrine 1947
created by Harry S Truman created the policy of containment where the US would spend its resources to stop the spread of communism to non-communist countries this was because the US had an atomic bomb and wanted to put pressure on the USSR
Marshall plan
when the USA offered lots of money, equipment and goods to countries which were affected in WW2 and in return these countries would buy American goods but the USSR and the satellite states refused the US’ Marshall plan
NATO 1949
The North Atlantic treaty organization signed by many nations saying they would defend another in NATO if they were invaded created because of the growing threat of the USSR and the east
cominform 1947
the communist information bureau it gave the USSR the ability to coordinate communist parties throughout Europe also made in response to the Truman doctrine introduced soviet policies such as the state control of industry and agriculture the organisation also purged anyone who disagreed with Moscow

where areas which the US would control politically and one of these countries would be Cuba
Cuban revolution
a revolution in Cuba in 1959 when Castro overthrew the dictator Batista this led to the US banning sugar from Cuban to destroy the Cuban economy but they turned to the USSR for help
Bay of pigs
in January 1961 the USA broke diplomatic relations with
Cuba and Eisenhower created a scheme where exiled Cubans would retake Cuba at the bay of pigs trained by the CIA they were called the Brigada 2506 but ultimately failed and around 100 were killed 1100 captured

one of the leading socialist who engineered the Cuban revolution and overthrew Batista and turned the country communist
