What did the USSR gain from the Yalta and Potsdam Conferences?
They could entre the Japanese war, USSR get 1/4 of Germany, USSR could have the Soviet Sphere of Influence, they could get some reparations.
What was the Iron Curtain?
A metaphor by Churchill about how Stalin was cutting the Soviet Sphere of Influence from the rest of the world.
What decisions about Germany were taken at Yalta and Potsdam?
Germany would be split into 4 for Br, US, Fr and USSR to rebuild the economy safely then make it independent. It also had to give reparations and Nazi’s would be persecuted.
Describe what happened at the Potsdam conference.
It took place from July- August 1945 and they sorted out the reconstruction of Europe and the terms with Germany.
It was with Stalin, Truman and Churchill/ Atlee.
What was decided at the Yalta conference and when did it happen?
Germany would reduce size and divided into 4. Liberated could choose the Government. United Nations replace LofN. USSR declare war on Japan, and the USSR was aloud the Soviet Sphere of influence.
What was the cold war?
When everyone was too scared to go back into was and so therefore there was tension and it started either at the Potsdam conference (July- August 1945) but defiantly when NATO was formed (April 1949)
What was Marshall Aid?
Money sent from USA to countries in Europe after the war to stop the spread of communism. USA sent $17 billion and the idea came from General Marshall- the idea was refused until the fall of Czechoslovakia to communism.
What was the Truman Doctrine?
After revolts in Greece Churchill sent troops into Greece to place the King back into power, this angered USSR and so they tried to take over Greece trying to make it communist. this caused a civil war that Br couldn’t fund. Truman then sent in troops and funded it in Feb- March 1947.
What happened during the Berlin airlift?
After the Berlin blockade USA and Br sent planes to provide food and recourses to the West Berliners. It was successful as if Stalin shot down a plane it would become an act of war.
Why was Marshall aid offered to countries Europe?
To stop the spread of communism as USA believed poverty lead to a revolution.
Why was it difficult to reach an agreement at the Potsdam conference?
Truman and Stalin didn’t get on and Churchill was replace with Atlee during the meeting.
Why was Berlin a cause of tension between 1945-49?
Because Berlin was in the middle of USSR’s 1/4, the berlin blockade nearly caused war.
When was the Berlin blockade?
June 1948- May 1949.
