Cold War:
Term for tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States, the two major world Powers after WWII, lasting 1945 to 1989.
Truman Doctrine:
President Harry S. Truman’s program announced in 1947 of aid to European countries—particularly Greece and Turkey—threatened by communism.
Marshall Plan
U.S. program for the reconstruction of post—World War II Europe through massive aid to former enemy nations as well as allies; proposed by General George C. Marshall in 1947.
Berlin Airlift
The U.S. flying planes over western Berlin to supply them with fuel and food.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO):
A pledge of mutual defense against any future Soviet attack.
Arms Race:
The Cold War arms race was a competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to have the most nuclear weapons.
Space Race:
The space race was the Cold War competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to make advances in space exploration.

Pres. Truman ordered creation of Loyalty Review Boards to investigate un-American activities, like being in the Communist Party.

Men returning from war married their sweethearts and a ‘baby boom’ led to large families and an increase in consumer spending.

Paid for vets to go to college, leading to higher paying jobs and more money to spend.

Invented first vaccine for polio, a disease that crippled many children, even a President (FDR).
