In May 1959, the government took over all the land in Cuba owned by foreign nationals especially america
Castro began appointing communist to his government and in February 1960 he made an agreement with soviet union making them buy Cuban sugar and provide economic aid

They were worries that a pro-soviet regime was being established just 145km from the us mainland
