nuclear deadlock
In the time of the Cold war is a balance of strength in atomic weapons of two countries. If one country (f.e.USA) attacks another (f.e.USSR) with atomic bombs the other country will react with their atomic bombs and it will lead to a fatale nuclear war. Since the countries were afraid of this catastrophe, there was a standstill in which no one attacked.

Domino theory
describes the fear of the usA that if a single country in south asia falls under communist control more and more countries are likely to fall for it too and cause a chain renction.
