Cold Front/Warm Front Strip Questions Flashcards
Which type of front is associated with clouds IN FRONT of it?
Warm front
Which type of front is associated with clouds BEHIND it?
Cold front
Which type of front is associated with rain and cloudy skies for a longer period of time? Why?
A warm front, and this is because it moves SLOWER
Which type of front is associated with short but strong storms with rain, hail, and lightning?
Cold front
Which type of front is associated with cumulonimbus clouds?
Cold front
Which type of front is associated with cirrus, altostratus, and nimbostratus clouds
Warm front
Which type of front is associated with low pressure
BOTH
What is an air mass?
A large volume of air with similar temps and humidity levels
What is an air front?
The area where 2 air masses meet
Why don’t air masses mix?
They don’t mix because they have different densities
What happens when a cold front approaches?
The cold air moves up under the warm air, pushing it up rapidly which cools moisture in the air- this causes condensation and clouds
What results from a cold front?
Fast moving thunderstorms, heavy rain, snow, strong winds, cooler temps and clear skies follow this
What happens when a warm front approaches?
The warm air slides up over the cold air because it is less dense than the cold air. Warm air gradually replaces the cold weather so it lasts longer
What results from a warm front?
Drizzly rain, clear skies, cumulus clouds, and warm temperatures
