Coinage metals Flashcards
Synonym of copper
Cuprum
Copper is the only ____ metal
Reddish
Copper is the ____most malleable metal
3rd
Copper is the _______ best conductor of electricity
2nd
2 components of copper are:
- Hemocyanin
- Cytochrome oxidase (refer to the complex IV of the electron transport chain)
Alloys of Cu: it means it’s a “mixture of metals”
o Brass: Cu + Zn
o Bronze: Cu + Sn
What are the 2 toxicity of Cu
o Wilson’s disease
o Copperiedus
What is Wilson’s disease ?
→ it’s a “genetic problem” (has a problem in chromosome #30.
What is Copperiedus?
Its a disease specifically a copper toxicity where there is a HIGH ingestion of copper) → gets from cookware (Cu + acid)
- Explanation: kapag ang isang panluto( kaldero or kawali) meron kasi siyang copper, kapag
naihalo to sa acid the copper will displace. Example mahilig ka magluto ng sinigang or
something na may acetic acid or vinegear tendency si copper mahihiwalay mismo dun sa
cookware mo it means pwedeng suamma yung copper sa pagkain mo. Pag naingest sayo
magkakaron ng “copper overload” that’s what you call it Copperriedus
CuSO4.5 H2O = Cupric sulfate pentahydrate
IMPORTANT SALT OF COPPER
Tx for these two toxicities of Cu?
Penicillamine (it’s an important chelator)
Deficiency of copper?
Menke’s disease
Uses of Cupric sulfate
- Antidote for “Phosphorus toxicity”
- Important component of “Bordeaux mixture” → can act as algicide in
a swimming pool. - Important reagent or component in making “Benedict’S Regeant,
Barfoad’s Reagent, Fehling’s Reagent” → these reagents are use in
testing REDUCING SUGAR or detecting the CARBOHYDRATES
Silver other names: BAS
- Aka:
o Bright
o Argentum (Ag)
o Shining

* Blue vitriol
* Roman vitriol
* Blue stone
