What’s the aim?
To understand the make up of criminal personalitys
To establish techniques that could be used to alter the personality dosorders that produce crime
To encourage an understanding of legal responsibility
To establish techniques that can be effective in preventing criminal behaviour
What’s the method?
A series of interviews conducted with the pps over several years
Who are the pps?
255 male pps
Various backgrounds - black whote , inner and outer city , suburbs , rich& poor
All confined to hospital due to being called not guilty in court by reason of insanity
There was no control group of non criminals
What are the findings?
Criminals are :
- very restless dissatisfied
- continuously set themselves apart from others
- want to live a life of excitement at whatever cost
- habitually angry
- lack empathy
- feel no obligation to anyone except their own
What’s the attrition ?
Of the 255 pps most dropped out of the study , -30 completed the interviews
-only 9 changed as a result
What did the programme consist of ?
Programme consisted of Freudian based therapy to find the root of criminality in past lives
Expected to improve their behaviour
