CBT aims to get the person to a point where they can DIY and work out their own way of tracking their problems
what did Beck develop ?
beck developed a therapy (CBT) to challenge the negative triad of the client
what are the 3 stages of Beck’s Cognitive therapy ?
1) the client will be assessed to discover the severity of their condition
2) the therapist will establish a baseline (starting point) prior to treatment, to help monitor improvement
3) Beck states that to feel better you must think positively.
so within CBT clients are asked to provide info about their negative triad
4) the therapist now may ask the client to do something that demonstrates their ability to succeed - behavioural activation
when the client is asked to provide info about their negative triad, what does the therapist then use ?
the therapist uses a process called realty testing
- so if the client says that ‘im useless and i always fail’ they will be asked wether in reality they have been successful at something
what are clients made aware of ? and what does this help with ?
clients are made aware of their negative thoughts
- in this way irrational thoughts can be replaced with more optimistic and rational thoughts

E = effect ( see a more beneficial effect on thought and behaviour )

Ellis argues that irrational thoughts are the main cause
what ideas is REBT based upon ?
REBT is based on the idea that whenever we become upset, it is not the events that took place in our lives that upset us but the beliefs that we hold that cause us to become depressed or anxious
What did Ellis believe about irrational beliefs ?
Ellis believed that irrational beliefs make impossible demands on the individual, leading to anxiety, failure and psychological difficulty
What does REBT challenge ?
empirical / logical disputing
REBT challenges the client to prove these statements and then replace them with more reasonable, realistic statements
