Interpersonal psychotherapy?

A

Assumes depression is caused by difficulties with interpersonal relationships. Aims to alleviate symptoms by improving interpersonal relationships, especially with significant others. Gathers info through role play and subtly gathering info, teaching effective methods of communication.

One to one sessions, once per week, lasts 12-16 weeks. Focuses on here and now, not past causes LINK. Three phases…

Initial phase - assess condition, come up with treatment goals. Depression explained to patient. Encouraged to be active, but not expected.

Second phase - interpersonal problems identified, info is gathered on troubled areas like role disputes and transitions.

Tearing toon phase - consolidate learning, prepared to use skills in future difficulties.

Interpersonal therapy A02?

A

Criticised on ethical grounds - therapist decides which thoughts and behaviours are acceptable and tries to change beliefs.

Only useful for unipolar patients who are motivated and articulate.

IPT not as researched as CBT, little evidence to show how it’s effective.

IPT used for maintenance after drug treatment, sprayed well for twice as long as those receiving a placebo.
