Memory
the persistance of learning over time through the encoding, storing and retrieval of information.
Encoding
the process of getting information into the memory system
Storage
the process of retaining encoded information over time
Short-Term Memory
activated memory that holds a few items briefly before the information is stored or forgotten
Long-Term Memory
relatively permanent and limitless storehouse of the memory system
Rehearsal
process of repeating information in order to keep that information active in memory
Serial Positioning Effect
the tendency to most effectively recall the first and last items on a list
Mnemonics
memory aids, a technique that uses vivid imagery and organizational devices
Chunking
organizing items into familiar manageable units
Flashbulb memory
a clear, sustained memory of an emotionally significant moment or event

the loss of memories
Recall
a measure of memory in which the person must retrieve information learned earlier
Recogntion
a measure of memory in which a person must identify items previously learned
Repression
in psychoanalytical theory, a defense mechanism that banishes memories from consciousness anxiety arousing thoughts, feelings and memories.
