Cognitive Interview Flashcards
What is the cognitive interview?
-It is a type of interview that contains four stages (reinstatement of context, change of narrative order, change of perspective, report everything)
Describe reinstatement of context
-This involves asking the eyewitness to imagine themselves at the event or scene at the time and imagine the environment and their emotions as it was during that time, cues might trigger more memories and greater detail therefore accuracy of recall increases
Describe report everything
-witness is encouraged to recall every detail of the event if they seem irrelevant or unimportant as they could trigger other important memories and the increase in detail will increase accuracy of recall
Describe change of narratives order
Witness is asked to recall the event in different chronological order from end to the beginning of the event, this is one to prevent the impact of schemas and their expectations of how the event occurred therefore accuracy of recall increases
Describe Change of perspective
Witness is asked to recall the event from another persons point of view or perspective this is to limit the impact of schemas and their expectations on hoe the event should have occurred which means the accuracy of recall increases
How is the cognitive interview enhanced
- Witness anxiety should be reduced
- distractions and interruptions should be minimised
- witness should be encouraged to speak slowly
