The cognitive approach tries to explain memory and perception which other approaches ignore.
Important contributions?
The cognitive approach has been beneficial in creating therapies such as CBT and developmental psychology like in teaching.
Scientific approach?
This approach has been tested under strict laboratory conditions using brain scabs including PET scans and MRI.
What are the three weaknesses of the cognitive approach?
- Nature/nurture
- Determinist approach
- Mechanistic approach
Nature/nurture?
The cognitive approach does use both nature and nurture, it does not look at important nature aspects such as genes.
Determinist approach?
The cognitive approach is determinist because schemas predetermine some behaviour.
Mechanistic?
the cognitive approach is mechanistic because the theory is based on the structure of a machine.
