Cognitive Development Flashcards
What did Piaget believe about cognitive development
Universal and invariant
What are the four different stages of development
Sensori-motor
Pre-operational
Concrete-operational
Formal-operational
Three limitations of piagets theory
Too rigid
No guarantee everyone develops in the phases
Underestimate the role of others in a child’s intellectual development
What did vygotsky argue?
A child is born with thinking abilities and the ability to learn but what is learnt depends on culture and society
What are the three ways of development according to vygotsky?
Society - social interaction
Zone of proximal development - place where child is in their learning and where they can potentially get to with the help of others.
Scaffolding- others scaffold individual through zpd
Who conducted the core study and when?
Piaget 1952
What type of research method was used?
Cross sectional experiment
What did the children have to do?
2 rows of counters identically placed in front of child and asked if the same amount of counters on each row. Then one row moved apart and asked same question.
Results of core study?
Pre operational stage children said stretched out row had more.
Concrete operational stage got it right
Three limitations of piagets case study?
Asked children the same question twice so child may answer differently second time think they were wrong
Lacks ecological validity
Sample size too small
