Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as a Treatment for Depression Flashcards
What two things does CBT aim to do?
- Help the patient change the way they think (cognitive)
2. Help the patient change behaviour to improve symptoms (behavioural)
What is the first stage of CBT?
Patient discusses symptoms with therapist, explains how they feel and why.
What is the second stage of CBT?
Patient realises their thoughts are negative, and aims to replace them with hrational and positive ways of thinking.
What is the last stage of CBT?
Patients given ‘homework’ to do in between sessions that involves practicing rational thought processes, and writing their feelings in a diary to be discussed in next session.
Give two strengths of using CBT to treat depression.
- Can be used w other therapies
- Longer-lasting treatment than only using antidepressants.
- Patients learn to control symptoms by trying to change negative thoughts and can then do so as needed
- Long-term use of antidepressants can cause side effects/stop working
Give two weaknesses of using CBT to treat depression.
- Relies on patient’s motivation
- Lack of motiv = symptom : patients may find it diff to complete sessions.
- Some may be offered drug therapy first to alleviate their symptoms and prepare for therapy.
- Possibly unethical
- Can be argued therapists encourage patients to believe their own thoughts and behaviours are problematic and somehow wrong
- Therapist has opportunity to abuse position by telling patients to change to suit therapist’s idea of ‘normal’
- Can be argued therapists encourage patients to believe their own thoughts and behaviours are problematic and somehow wrong
