A

Therapist works with client to identify negative thoughts contributing to problems.

Cognitive triad results in irrational and faulty thinking.

Client and therapist play an active role in therapy. Client is required to do external work to aid recovery.

Describe the component “Behavioral element”

A

Therapist encourages client to engage in reality testing during session and sets homework.

Behavioral activation: client plans pleasant activities proactively to give a sense of accomplishment. This induces positive thoughts and retract from negative thinking patterns. Moves away from maladaptive behavior.

Encourages replacing dysfunctional thoughts with constructive ones.

Describe the component “Specific techniques”

A

Dysfunctional thought diary: Client keeps a record of events leading to unpleasant emotions. They record negative thoughts and rate belief. Clients write rational response and re-rate belief as a percentage.

Reality testing and cognitive restructuring: ‘therapy during therapy’. The therapist identifies negative thinking patterns and challenges them by asking questions.
