What is the logic of CBT?
Symptoms are caused/maintained by irrational beliefs and CBT teaches techniques to interpret, identify and manage symptoms
What are the NICE guidelines for NHS treatment?
Only 1-2-1 psychological therapy is available and patients should be complaint with antipsychotics before CBT
What are the 4 stages for CBT?
- Identify symptoms and beliefs
- Challenge irrational beliefs
- Develop more rational interpretations
- Teach techniques for managing symptoms
What is normalisation?
Enabling the patient to maranta in the realistic element of the belief and delusions are irrational extensions of normal beliefs
What are techniques for managing symptoms?
Self-distraction strategies when thoughts intrude, drowning out the sound of voices when they occur and challenging voices with replies

A cochrane meta-analysis of clinical trials comparing pateints on antipsychotics vs pateints on CBT and anti-psychotics
What were Jahaur’s findings?
The effect size for reduction of symptoms was small - 0.15
What was Morrison’s study?
A clinical trial comparing those receiving CBT and no treatment
What were Morrison’s findings?
Effect size for reduction of symptoms was moderate - 0.46
What are methodological issues with Morrison’s study?
It is a single study so findings are less well replicated
What are advantages ofCBT its appropriateness?
It provides long-term effects as provides coping mechanisms whereas drugs encourage passivity
What are disadvantages of CBT for appropriateness?
CBT is less cost effective as it is expensive whereas drugs are cheap, and CBT is more disruptive and time consuming whereas medication can be fit into life
How can the effectiveness of CBT be affected by symptoms of schizophrenia?
Insight can be prevented by delusions, motivation can be effected by abolition and focus can be impacted by thought disorder
How does CBt compare to drug treatment with side effects?
If CBT is ineffective, it is unlikely to have other negative effects whereas drugs can have severe side effects
