What are some characteristics of CBT?
- Structured, short term, present- oriented therapy
- Directed toward solving current problems and modifying dysfunctional thinking and behavior
- Based on cognitive conceptualization
- Modifies thinking and belief system to bring about enduring emotional and behavioral change
- For lasting change, works on deeper levels of cognitioin (basic beliefs)
Who and how was Cognitive Behavioral Therapies developed?
- Aaron Beck in the 1960’s
- Trained in psychoanalysis
- Conducted studies on patients’ dreams to test psychoanalytic theory of depression
- Noticed themes of defectiveness, deprivation, and loss in depressed patients’ dreams and thoughts
- Developed cognitive theory of depression, and later anxiety
What is the cbt view of nature?
- Clients’ beliefs have highly person meanings and can be discovered by the client
- People respond to cognitive representations of events rather than the events themselves
- Dysfunctional beliefs can be unlearned and more functional beliefs can be developed
- Dysfunctional emotions and behaviors change when cognitions are modified
What are automatic thoughts?
personalized thoughts triggered by an event/ stimuli that lead to an emotional response
What are core beliefs and how do they play a role in cbt?
- Our most basic, fundamental beliefs
- It is global and applies to situations in general
- Determines how individuals arrange, categorize, and interpret their experiences
How do core beliefs develop?
Early in life as a result of biological, developmental, and environmental factors
Can core beliefs be functional or dysfunctional?

- Development of Ib’s influenced by core beliefs
- Include attitudes, assumptions and rules
- Often unarticulated
How do intermediate beliefs influence an individuals behaviors?
They influence how one views situations, which in turn influence how one thinks, feels and ultimately behaves
What are goals of CBT?
- increase awareness of the role of cognition in emotional and behavioral problems.
- Increase ability to identify and respond to dysfunctional cognitions
- Therapists teach clients to become their own cognitive therapist
What is the clients role in CBT?
- An active partner
- As a student, takes notes during sessions, and complete hw
- Moves from dependecy to independence
What is the therapist’s role in the therapeutic process?
- Collaborative partner and teacher
- Provides support necessary or sufficient for success
- Therapist engenders responsible dependecy in client
How are initial sessions essential to build rapport?
- The focus is on problem definition, goal setting and symptom relief.
- Therapist provides psycho-education in initial sessions
- Behavioral Interventions may be more prominent
What do the middle sessions in the therapeutic process consist of?
- Emphasis shifts from symptoms to patterns of thinking
- Shift from focus on automatic thoughts to intermediate and core beliefs
- Termination
