Cocktail party effect
The concept originally suggested by cherry in which we would hear it when our own name is said within a crowded room
Dichotic, listening
When the headphones are worn by participant and a different message is played in each ear
Shadowing
When a participant is told to focus on a passage of text and repeat it out loud as they hear it
Affective instruction
When a person is asked to do something ,preceded by their name being said
Non-affective instruction
When a person is asked to do something, but the name is not used
Inattentional area
Only listen to the conversation you are participating in and not the conversation around you
Attended message
The message that sent to the ear and being shadowed and process
Rejected message
The message sent to the ear that is not being shadowed, and is therefore unattended

The ability to retain information and to demonstrate this retention of information through behaviour
Reconstructive memory
The way in which I will biases and prejudice can unconsciously lead us to have memories of events that are distortion of what actually happened
