Q

the process of REBT

A

1)the patient will first have an initial assessment in which the patient and therapist identify the problems. Afterwards a set of goals is agreed and a plan of action to achieve these
2)then a therapist teaches the client how to identify their irrational thoughts/ beliefs
3)the next stage is to change and replace these irrational beliefs with more rational and positive ones
4)in order to do this, the therapist disputes these irrational, self defeating beliefs (dispute belief system)
5) effective disputing changes these irrational self-identity beliefs into more rational beliefs so that new feelings reducing the symptoms of depression are produced
6) REBT also involves ‘reality testing’- the client will be put in a situation that will show them that their beliefs are irrational and inaccurate . They will be taught to practice positive and optimistic thinking and given homework assignments.
7)the client is finally taught to value themselves as a human being by providing respect and appreciation regardless of what the client says and how the client behaves. This is called unconditional positive regard

Q

evaluation of cognitive approach to treating depression

A

:) a key strength of CBT is that there is a wealth of evidence that demonstrates its effectiveness in treating depression
:)there are also a number of practical advantages of CBT in comparison to other psychological therapies such as pyschoanylsis
x-however an issue to consider is that CBT may not be suitable therapy for everyone that suffers from depression
x-finally there is some evidence that suggests that CBT is no more effective than other talking therapies
