- the cognitive approach is interested in how negative thinking patterns and other cognitive processes such as schema could cause depression

Negative schema
- a tendency to adopt a negative view of the world which was acquired during childhood
- can be caused by a variety of factors including parental or peer rejection
- these negative schemas are activated when the person encounters a new situation that resembles the original conditions in which these schemas were learned

A
- found that depressed participants who were given negative automatic-thought statements became more and more depressed, supporting the view that negative thinking leads to depressions

Limitation
A
- blames the client
- says the client is the one responsible for their disorder
- in one sense this is a good thing as it gives the client the power to change the way things are
- this means that a therapist may overlook situational factors, not considering how life events for family issues may have contributed to the mental disorder
