Cognitive Approach: Memory Flashcards
What is capacity?
Amount of info that can be kept in a memory store.
What is duration?
Length of time the information can be retained in memory store
What is encoding?
The process of converting info from one form to another. Allows for info to be passed between memory stores.
What is sensory memory?
Memory stores for each of the five senses. Encoding responds to the sense itself. Huge capacity, small duration.
What is short term memory?
Limited capacity memory store. Encoding is mainly acoustic, capacity is from 5-9 items and duration is up to 30 seconds without rehearsal.
What is long term memory?
Permanent memory store. Has practically unlimited capacity. Encoding is mainly semantic.
