Cognitive Approach Flashcards
behaviourism
the belief that the mind can only be observed based on behaviour and what can be seen- psychologists believe this is not true
cognition
processes involving thinking, decision-making, perseption, language, memory, attention
working memory model
there is the central executive, which monitors and coordinates the visuo-spatial sketchpad and phonological loop and puts information into the long term memory store. It is more a control of attention.
multi-store model
- sensory memory, short-term memroy (capasity of 7, only lastls 30 seconds), long-term memory (probably infinete storage, lasts with repetition)
schemas
mental representations that help us store and make sense of information through past experiences
algorithms
a process for coming to the right conclusion, best decision, or correct answer (uses system 2)
heuristics
quick mental shortcuts for hopefully producing the right answer
confirmation bias
the tendensy to seek information that confirms what you already believe
illusory correlation
when you think two things are related because they occur at the same time, when they are actually not related
flashbulb memories
highly emotionaly charged memories of important events
