Cognitive Flashcards
what is the multi store model of memory
explanation for stm
has four main components
what is the central executive
attentional processwith supervisory role
allocates slave subsystems to tasks
limted processing capacity and doesnt store info
what is the phonological loop
deal with auditory info
encodes acoustically
subdivided into articulatory process (allows maintenance rehearsal) and phonological store which stores the info
what is the visuo spatial sketchpad
deals woth visual and spatial info
encoding is visual
e.g. if someone gives you directions you can imagine the route in your head
subdivided into visual cache which stores visual data and inner scribe which records arrangement of objects in visual field
what is the episodic buffer
temporary store for info from other subsystems
combines with ltm and other cognitive processes
limited capacity of about 4 chunks
maintains sense of time sequencing
strength of wmm - dual task experiment
baddeley
found performance on visual and verbal tasks together performed no worse than when done separate (different subsystems)
performamce on two visual / two verbal was poor
competing for dominance of same subsystem
shows there must be separate slave subsystems
weakness of wmm - CE not fully understood
doesnt explain much
‘ the central executive is the most important but least understood component of working memory’ baddeley
means working memory not fully explained as the ce needs to be more specified than just ‘attention’
application of wmm - shallice and warrington (KF)
amnesia after brain injury
had poor stm for auditory information but processed visual info normally e.g. his immediate recall of words better when he read then vs when they were read to him
phonological loop damaged but VSS intact
amnesia not necessarily a global disorder
understand more about amnesia
counter arguement for KF and wmm
brain injured patients like KF are unique so not generalisable to entire population
case tsudies hard to replicate so cant be sure findings are valid - need to be cautious about generalising their findings
ethical issues related to case studies of people with amnesia
- confidentiality is one issue - must not identify ppt
issues about whether someone with a memory deficit can ever give true consent if they dont remember doing it
use initials to avoid names e.g. KF
