cognitive! Flashcards
Compare system 1 and system 2 in the dual processing model.
System 1:
- context dependent, narrow
- everyday unconscious decision making
- creates impressions and inclinations
- prone to error
- automatic and requires little effort
system 2:
- abstract
-conscious
- logical, more reliable
- slower, requires effort
- transfers information from past experiences into present
St/We of dual processing model
st:
- studies such as the wason selection task are reliable
- there is biological evidence suggesting different types of thinking are processed in different parts of the brain or the effects of emotion on our decision making
we:
- the model could be an oversimplification/reductionist, eg it doesnt cover inter-system interaction
- loose definition, e.g. just because a response is fast doesnt mean its not system 2
define heuristics
heuristics: rules used to make decisions/judgements, involving focusing on a portion of a complex problem and ignoring its other portions.
