cognition- history of memory research and sensory memory Flashcards
1
Q
what is memory?
A
mental process or ability to encode, dtore and retrieve information
2
Q
what are the 3 stages of memory?
A
encoding- to get information into the memory system
storage- to retain information over time
retrieval- to get information out of memory
3
Q
history of memory
A
- hermaan ebbinghaus: the first to study memory scientifically
- carl lashley: search the “engram” in the brain
- donald hebb: cells that fire together, wire together
- terje lomo: long term potentiation
4
Q
the multi store model
A
refer to slide 13
5
Q
what is sensory memory
A
(or registers registers) very temporary buffer that allows us to hold information from different sensory modalities (visual, auditory, alfactory, tactile, gustatory)
attended => short term memory
non attended => rapid decay
6
Q
what are the 2 types of sensory memory?
A
- iconic memory (the visual sensory memory)
- echoic memory (the auditory sensory memory)
7
Q
state- echoic memory holds less information than iconic memory
A
