Cognition and Perception Flashcards
What is meant by awareness
related ti consciousness, however, awareness is more closely defined as the understanding of yourself, situational experience, and personal state
essentially:
who are you
where are you
how are you doing
what is meant by cognition
cognition is a multi-faceted and requiring the moving of attention and thought process fluidity.
cognition involves:
attention
problem solving/ visuospatial
abstraction
labeling/recognition
fluency
short term memory
working memory
what is meant by perception
perception is how we interpret our surroundings and experiences through the lens of previous experiences and abstraction. this happens through an integration of our senses.
we use light, sound , temperature, light touch, sharp and dull, and so forth processing our surroundings
why is it important to explore awareness does it stay the same
awareness changes overtime depending on the state we are in:
sleep
coma
initial neurological insult
Anastesia/Delirium
how is awareness tested?
AOx4
sometimes AOx3
can you tell me your name
where are you right now
what happened
what day/month is it
who is the president
what does cognition look like over time?
cognition is thought to slightly wane overtime but senescence is not usually an occurrence
how is cognition tested?
Can be tested in a variety of ways:
Formal Outcome Measures like:
Montreal Cognitive Assessment
MiniMental Status Exam
Abbreviated Measures like:
SAVEAHAART
how does perception change overtime?
Multiple different pathways may impair perception especially issues with the dorsal and ventral visual streams.
These streams integrate information:
Dorsal – How is it moving? (The action stream) - Objective
Ventral – WHAT IS IT? (The knowing stream) - Subjective
what conditions can impact perception?
Conditions that may impact perception?
Stroke
Traumatic Brain Injury
Brain Infections/Tumors
Delirium
Dementia
Drugs/Alcohol
How can we test perception?
clock drawing task
facial recognition
reach and grasp objects at different distances
stair climbing
where do you start with awareness, cognition, or perception
awareness
cognition
perception
