Cognition Flashcards
ability of brain to perceive, process, store, retrieve and manipulate information
cognitition
Any intervention strategy, technique that enables clients and their families to come to terms with, manage or reduce cognitive deficits
cognitive rehabilitation
cognition involves skills of (3 things)
Understanding and knowing
Judgement and decision making
Overall environmental awareness
Changes in brain structure, function and chemistry - result of acquired condition or traumatic injury > impairs motor, sensory and cognitive functions
neurocognitive disorder
affective factors impacting cognitive process
Emotions
Anxiety effects and limits memory skills (working memory)
Physical or emotional pain
Depression, passive engagement with environment
Mental distractions
Task demands, task and cognitive interaction
Contextual cues/stimuli – arousal properties of environment
Cultural Influences
Socio-economic status
Poverty, social deprivation
with this type of NCD, individuals are able to perform ADLs but have difficulty with IADLs. They will have deficits with episodic and memory that involves recall
mild NCG
this type of NCD will have executive function problems involving problem-solving, planning their day, and multi-tasking
mild NCG
this type of NCD is associated with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), Huntington’s Disease, HIV infection, Parkinson’s Disease, cerebrovascular impairments (people heart disease and diabetes)
major NCD
this type of NCG will have a rapid decline or gradual loss of function. Individuals will have memory loss with/without depression, behavioral changes, and language and problem-solving deficits
major NCD
how will a cognitive impairment impact performing tasks
reduced efficiency and effectiveness
how will a cognitive impairment impact functioning
reduced pace and persistence
how will a cognitive impairment impact ADL performance
decrease ADL routine performance
how will a cognitive impairment impact adaptation
difficulty with new or problematic situations
the “golden key” to success in cognition
awareness of deficit
what are the 3 types of awareness
intellectual awareness
emergent awareness
anticipatory awareness
Clients belief that they are capable of doing or achieving outcome
self-efficacy
A client presents with the following: Unmotivated or uncooperative in therapy Sets unrealistic goals Displays poor judgement Fails to see need for strategies Longer LOS in rehab
What is their awareness level
low
A client presents with the following:
Actively participate in Treatment
Achieve better rehab outcomes
Strong Experiences in Therapeutic Relationship
What is their awareness level
high
Awareness level where the client able to state or demonstrate knowledge of problems but not monitor problems. They understand at some level that their cognition is impaired, but they cannot independently use strategies to overcome those problems
intellectual awareness
how do you know a client has achieved intellectual awareness
they can demonstrate knowledge of the problems and recognize general implications
what interventions would you use to achieve intellectual awareness with a client
Someone other than client initiates strategies
Use and document through self-rating skills (self-report questionnaires and assessments (Interviews)
Ask client about their perception of the strength/ limitations
Awareness level where client is able to demonstrate knowing when a problem is happening, ONLY as it is occurring without prompting
emergent awareness
