Cofactors and Enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
What are cofactors?
A
A non-protein ‘helper’ which allows the enzymes to carry out their function. They may form part of the active site or transfer atoms or groups from one reaction to another.
2
Q
How are they obtained?
A
Through the diet as minerals e.g: iron, calcium, chloride
3
Q
What are the three types of cofactors?
A
Prosthetic group, coenzymes, activators
4
Q
What do activators do?
A
Change charge distribution and sometimes shape of active site to make enzyme bind more easily
5
Q
What are coenzymes?
A
Small, in-organic molecules that are not permanently attached to the enzyme and are required for enzymes to bind to the substrate.
