Coenzyme And Cofactor Flashcards
What are cofactors
A cofactor is a small non protein molecules that is boun either tigthly Or losely to an enzyme and is required for catalysis
Catalytic activity of many enzymes depends on the presence of cofactors
What are cofactors classified into
Cofactors are classified into Essential ions ( inorganic) and coenzymes ( organic)
Essential ions are classified into as activator ions ( Loosely bound) or metal ions of metalloenzymes
Coenzymes are divided into cosubstrates( losely bound) and prostate groups ( tigthly bound)
What are activator ions
Activator ions bind Reversibly to enzyme and often participate in substrate binding
What are metal ions of metalloenzymes
They are cations that are tigthly bound to enzyme and participate directly in catalysis (Fe, Zn, Cu, Co)
What are coenzymes
Coenzymes are derivatives of vitamins without wich the enzyme cannot exhibit any reaction.
Coenzymes accepts a particular group removed from the substrate or donates a particular group to the substrate. It mainly transports groups btw enzyme
What is a cosubstrates
They are coenzymes which are losely attached to the apoenzyme and are separated easily by dialysis
What is thiamine pyrophosphate TPP
TPP is formed from thiamine in small intestine brain and liver
TPP coenzyme is required by enzymes in the decarboxylation of aloha keto acid
