A

-1 in 100-300
-Can occur at any age but peaks in childhood and 50-60s
-Increased risk if present in first degree relatives

What causes coeliac disease?

A

-T-cell responds to gluten in the small bowel
-Causes villous atrophy and malabsorption

How does coeliac disease present?

A

-Diarrhoea
-Steatorrhoea
-Abdo pain
-Bloating
-N+V
-Aphthous ulcers / angular stomatitis
-Weight loss
-Fatigue (anaemia)

How would you investigate a patient with coeliac disease?

A

-FBC / haematinics
-Serology for anti-transglutaminase
-Duodenal biopsy (whilst on gluten diet)

What treatment would you consider for someone with coeliac disease?

A

-Lifelong gluten-free diet (ie no wheat, barley, oats)
-Low volume of oats may be tolerable
