coding capacity and duration Flashcards
research on coding
Baddeley 1966
gave different list of words to four groups of ps to remember
1 acoustically similar words that sound the same
2 acoustically dissimilar words that sound dissimilar
3 semantically similar words with similar meaning
4 semantically dissimilar words with diff meanings
- immediately after hearing , stm recall did worse on acoustically similar words
- interval of 20 minute , ltm recall , recall did worse on semantically similar words
- shows ltm = semantic
research on capacity
digit span
Jacobs 1887
developed a technique to measure digit span
researcher reads aloud 4 digits and the p is asked to recall in the correct order out loud . if this is correct the researcher reads out 5 digits until the participant cannot recall the order correctly . this determines the indviduals digit span .
Jacobs found that the mean span for digits across all participants was 9.3 items the mean span for letters was 7.3
research on capacity
span of memory and chunking
Miller 1956
made observations of everyday practice . he noted. that things come in 7’s . 7s day a week , 7b. notes on the musical scale etc .
suggests that the span for of stm is about 7 items.
Miller noted people can recall 5 words as well as they can recall 5 letters , they do this by chunking , grouping sets of digits or letters into units or chunks .
research on duration
stm
Peterson 1959
tested 24 undergraduates each student took part in eight trials .
on each trial the student was given a constant syllable known as trigram to remember and also a three digit number .
the student was asked to count backwards to prevent mental rehearsal of the constant .
