Coding and Different Coding Procedures Flashcards
1
Q
What is coding in relation to qualitative research?
A
The identification of topics, similarities and differences that are revealed through the narratives of the participants and interpreted by the researcher.
2
Q
What does coding enable the researcher to do?
A
Enable the researcher to understand the world from the participants point of view
3
Q
What are the five steps for coding?
A
- Prepare and organise data - printing and compiling notes and material and labeling to help analyse results
- Review and explore the data - reading data a couple of times to get a feeling of what it contains
- Create initial codes - using idea charts, sticky notes, pointers to relate to your results
- Review those codes and revise
or combine them into themes - identify recurring themes, language, opinions and beliefs - Present themes in a cohesive manner - consider audience, the purpose of study and content should be included to best tell story of your data
4
Q
What are two types of coding procedures?
A
- Deductive coding - creating a codebook as a reference guide for the coding process and is established before data collection begins in current field of study
- Inductive coding - know nothing about research topic and perform heuristic and exploratory research. Don’t have a codebook and build on data from scratch.
5
Q
What does CAQDAS stand for?
A
Computer-Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software
6
Q
List 7 ways which Qualitative Data Analysis Software may assist the researcher during qualitative data analysis process:
A
- Organise qualitative data
- Manage qualitative data
- Create memos identifying initial thoughts and feelings about interview itself.
- Assign codes to qualitative data
- Combine and assemble codes under a category or theme
- Generate word frequency searches
- Create mind maps to organise thoughts
