-there is a tight time limit to publishing news

A

-news outlets are very competitive about breaking news
-if a newspaper or news programme is the first and only news organisation breaking a story they will rate that very highly
-you have to either be the first person to report something or report it the best

A

-the bigger the impact a story has the more people it affects
-the more money/resources it involves the higher its value->known as threshold
-the more people something impacts the more likely people would want to read it
-you wont read something that doesn’t affect you (area etc)

What is proximity news value?

A

-audiences supposedly relate more to stories that are close to them geographically or involve more people from their country or those that are reported that way
-people relate to news that is close to them in their area or involving people they know or who are in the same area as you (eg schools)

A

-when things have a narrative or something to follow along with then people are interested->royal family->family narrative intrigues people

-not quite public interest but not ages away and is simple->its unique to draw you in

What is elite nations/people news value?

A

-any story which covers an important, powerful nation (or organisation) has greater news values than a story which covers a less important nation->the same goes for people
-causes a lack of powers for other places like Africa because we couldn’t read about it
-simplistic narrative->easier to follow along as we think we know about the country like our own in some way
-a story with power (a head of a company rather than a worker) has more news value

A

-human interest stories that are about real people
-you can have empathy but it might not have great news value so it might not make front cover
-it depends on the scale of the event
