What are the code of ethics ?
Honesty and integrity Authority , respect and courtesy equality and diversity Use force orders and instructions Duties and responsibilities confidentiality fitness for work conduct challenging and reporting improper conduct
Honesty and integrity ?
Act with honesty and integrity at all times
use your position , police identification or warrant card for policing purposes only and not to gain personal advantage
Authority , respect and courtesy ?
Carry your role and responsibility in an efficient, diligent and professional manner
Avoid any behaviour that might impair your effectiveness / damage the reputation of the police
ensure your language is appropriate
Equality and diversity ?
uphold the law regarding human rights an equality
treat all people fairly and with respect
treat people impartially
Use force ?
you must only use as minimal force as possible to achieve the necessary result
have to account for your actions
orders and instructions ?
Must obey lawful order that is given and must follow police regulations
must be reasonable instructions
must use discretion
Duties and responsibilities ?
carry out duties and obligations to the best of your ability.
take full responsibility for your actions and be prepare to explain them
Confidentiality ?
Be familiar with and abide by the data protection principles. ( Data protection act 1998 ).
do not disclose information , on or off duty
Fitness for work ?
Be fit to carry out a role in policing and fulfil your responsibilities
not consume alcohol whilst on duty or the use of illegal drugs or other legal substances
If you believe you are unfit to undertake your role you must declare this to your line manager
Conduct
Must maintain the highest of standards
must question if your action will discredit the police service you serve.
Challenging and reporting improper conduct
Should never ignore unethical or unprofessional behaviour by a colleague despite their rank, grade or role
if you don’t want to report directly you should report it through your line manager
