Q

Why was the Coca-Cola bottle commissioned?

A

In the early 1900s, the company launched a competition to design a new bottle as they were frustrated by imitators copying their product and they wanted a distinctive bottle that would distinguish it from its competitors

Q

What was the design brief for the Coca-Cola bottle?

A

The bottle needed to be recognised as a Coca-Cola bottle even ‘if he feels it in the dark. The bottle should be shaped that, even if broken, a person could tell what it was’

Q

Where did the two designers of the Coca-Cola bottle get their inspiration from?

A

Even though the key ingredients at the time was the coca leaf and the kola nut, the designers mistakenly based their designs on a picture of the unrelated cocoa pod

Q

How did the Coca-Cola bottle compare to the blander and more featureless bottles of the era?

A

The bottle felt distinctively modern due to the curvy shape (a feminine form with proportions approximate to the aesthetic ideal of the female body), soft fluting and embossed logo

Q

How does the Coca-Cola bottle easily differentiate itself from other brands?

A

The logo is embossed and written in Spencerian script (a standard typeface in the US before the typewriter) which makes it difficult to imitate. The smooth section where the logo lies appears centre stage, between two curtains, where the eyes can easily find it
