What is Competency Based Training?
CBT:
- Is a training delivery approach that focuses on the competency development of the learner as a result of the training
- Emphasises what the learner can actually do
- Focuses on the outcome rather than the learning process
- Is concerned with the attainment and application of knowledge, skills and attitudes to a soecific level of competency
10 principles of CBT (1-5)
- Training is based on a curriculum developed from the competency standard
- Learning is modular in structure
- Training delivery is individualized and self-paced
- Training is based on the work that must be performed
- Training materials are directly related to the competency standards and the curriculum
10 principles of CBT (6-10)
- Assessment is based on the collection of evidence of work performance based on industry or organizational required standard
- Training is based on on- and off-the job components
- The system allows Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
- Training allows multiple entry and exit points
- Training programs are registered in UTPRAS
What is the difference between traditional teaching vs CBT
- Pace
- Entry
- Progress
- Retesting
Traditional teaching vs CBT: Pace
TT: Instructors in control the learning pace and thus focus on managing instructions
CBT: Trainees control their own pace and instructors focus on learning
Traditional teaching vs CBT: Entry
TT: Trainees enter at same time and cover same learning materials
CBT: Trainees enter at various times and can be trained for different units of competency within the same program
Traditional teaching vs CBT: Progress
TT: Trainees proceed from one topic to another at the same time
CBT: Trainees proceed only when the current topic is mastered
Traditional teaching vs CBT: Retesting
TT: Retesting is discouraged, so if you fail a particular exam, you cannot retake it
CBT: Retesting is encouraged to reach mastery
What is the role of the CBT Trainer?

1. Serve as a team member to determine what is to be learned
- Stimulate motivation of trainees

- Evaluate trainee achievements and assist with obtaining individual rewards and in designing a personalised study plan
- Instil confidence and help trainees who really need help
What is the role of a trainee
The trainee can:
1. Select what to learn and when to learn it and should be responsible for the learning
- Learn at their own rate
- Request credit for what they already know
- Choose how to learn and decide when they are ready to perform the task
- Evaluate their own progress
- Move freely around the workshop area
- Understand that they are rated mainly on performance and must learn according to interest, needs and abilities
