Coastsl Management Flashcards
What are some facts and reasons why we need to protect our coast
More than 20% of land area in the uk is within 10km of the coast
40% of manufacturing lies close to the coast
33% of land near the coast is pasture land and 25% is arable land
Why does the coastline need managing 3 reasons
Coastal erosion
Coastal flooding
Failure of former defences
What are some possible management strategies
Advance the line
Hold the line
Managed retreat
Do nothing
Why might some people choose the hold the line
Protecting infrastructure like gas pipes or power lines
Cultural , historic , environmental importance or important tourist areas
Why might you advance the line in a coastal area
If the land value is extremely high
Last resort
Done in Felixstowe port
Why might you do nothing in coastal management
The land isn’t for farming , industry , manufacturing and is just very low value
Or the rock there is already very strong like granite and doesn’t require any defences
Why might you choose to perform a managed retreat in a coastal area
The sea defences are too expensive to maintain and are getting old
In Donna Nook- create habitats and tourist locations like saltmarshes
What is a cost benefit analysis
A way of splitting up advantages and disadvantages of performing a piece of coastal management
What does tangible and intangible costs and benefits mean
Tangible- costs and benefits are known and can be given monetary value
Intangible- costs may be difficult to access and can’t be given monetary value Intangible
What is some examples of tangible costs
Cost of producing management strategy
Property/infrastructure damage
Loss of life
Loss in tourism
Land value -agriculture
Cost of management strategy over time
What are some examples of intangible costs
Visual impact
Traffic/congestion
Loss of Cultural heritage
Loss of Historic areas
Environmental factors-habitats
