Coasts- Types Of Weathering Flashcards
1
Q
Weathering
A
The breaking up of rocks
3
Q
Freeze thaw/ Frost shattering
A
- Water seeps into rock cracks
- When water freezes it expands rock 9% in volume
- Cracks enlarge and this process repeats and water freezes and thaws causing the rock to break
4
Q
Salt weathering
A
- A common type of weathering on the coast
- When sea water soaks into a rock, evaporation may occur
- Salt crystals are left behind and they grow causing the rock to crumble and weaken
5
Q
Chemical Weathering
A
- Rainwater is naturally acidic because CO2 (in air) reacts with rainwater to form carbonic acid
- This type of acid rain is weakly acidic and reacts slowly with minerals in rock
6
Q
Biological Weathering
A
- Caused by animals and plants wearing away rocks (e.g. burrowing and growing in cracks)
7
Q
Physical Weathering
A
- Caused by physical changes in temperature, freezing and thawing, and the effects of wind, rain and waves.
