- The movement of sediment along the coastline
- (Waves break at an angles to the beach, swash runs up to the beach at an angle but backwash flows straight back which moves pebbles in a zigzag direction )

Explain the process of the formation of a spit.
A
- Longshore drift continues but if the coastline changes or there is a river estuary it still continues which leads to the growth of a finger of land called a spit
- Lagoons of still, calm water and salt marshes establish themselves in the waters

- If a spit continues to grow all the way across a bay it forms a bar
