Sand dunes are build ups of sand that are created around obstacles on a beach, these are usually things like rocks or human things like fences.

Sand dunes are formed by strong winds and lots of sediment moving around through saltation

When the wind encounters beach obstacles it stops the velocity and the sediment being carried is dropped.

Over time, plants known as pioneers such as marram grass take root on the dune, their root systems help to stabilise the sand.

As the plants die off they add nutrients and humus to the sand dune improving the soil, so more complex plants can grow.
