Coasts Mid Unit Flashcards
What types of erosion is there?
.Attrition
.Solution
.Abrasion
.Hydraulic Action
What is attrition?
Rocks that bash together to become smoother/smaller
What is solution?
A chemical reaction dissolving rocks
What is abrasion?
Rocks hurdled at the base of a cliff to break pieces off
What is hydraulic action?
Water enters cracks in the cliff, air compresses causing the cracks to expand.
How is a sand dune formed?
The sea brings sediment to the beach and the wind redistributes the sediment, obstacles cause the sediment to deposit and forms the embryo dune.
2 types of soft engineering?
Beach nourishment
Dune Regeneration
Positives of soft engineering?
Less expensive
Doesn’t disrupt nature
Negatives of soft engineering?
Less effective
Takes time
2 types of hard engineering?
Sea wall
Groynes
Positives of hard engineering
Very effective
Reliable
Negatives of hard engineering
Expensive
Affects nature
