What is the definition of a coast
The area where the land meets the sea
What is a wave
The movement of energy through water
What’s a fetch
The distance the wind blows over the water to create a wave
What is a swash
Water washing up the beach when a wave breaks
What is a backwash
Water running down the beach after a wave breaks
What is a constructive wave
Where the swash is more powerful than the backwash this builds up the land
What is a destructive wave
When does swash is weaker than the backwash this erodes the land
What is a bay
A part of the beach where the land curls inwards made of soft rock
What is a headland
A headland is a piece of hard rock that sticks out in the coastline
What is sediment
Naturally occurring materials that have been broken down into smaller pieces
What is longshore drift
The transportation of sediment along a coastline
What is prevailing wind
The direction that the wind usually blows from
What is an estuary
Where river meets the sea
What is deposition
When water drops sediment it is carrying
What is a spit
A stretch of sediment which sticks out into the sea from the land
