coasts Flashcards
abrasion
Bits of rock and sand in waves grind down cliff surfaces like sandpaper.
alluvium
a deposit of clay, silt, and sand left by flowing floodwater in a river valley or delta, typically producing fertile soil.
amenity value
Amenity value means how highly the coast is regarded by the community as part of the local landscape
attrition
Waves smash rocks and pebbles on the shore into each other, and they break and become smoother.
back shore
The back shore area of a beach extends from the limit of high water foam lines to dunes or extreme inland limit of the beach. It is only affected by waves during exceptional high tides or severe storms.
backwash
the motion of receding waves
barrier beaches
a sand ridge that rises slightly above the surface of the sea and runs roughly parallel to the shore, from which it is separated by a lagoon.
