Coasts Flashcards
1
Q
What is Hydraulic action?
A
When water hits the cliff forcing pockets into cracks.
2
Q
What is Corrosion?
A
The dissolving of rocks and minerals by sea water.,
3
Q
What is Abrasion?
A
When the waves pick up stones and hurl them at the cliff.
4
Q
What is Attrition?
A
When a material is carried by the waves and becomes rounded.
5
Q
What Biological weathering?
A
When the roots of vegetation grow into a crack as the tree gets larger the crack is forced to be larger.
6
Q
What is Acid rain?
A
When the air is polluted the rain becomes polluted which reacts with the weak minerals to dissolve.
7
Q
How is a wave cut platform formed?
A
- Weathering weakens the top of the cliff
- Hydraulic action causes causes a wave cut notch
- The notch causes increases in size and causes the cliff to collapse
- The sea carries the rubble away forming a wave cut platform
- This process continues and the cliff continues to retreat
8
Q
How is a cave, arch, stack, stump formed?
A
- Hydraulic action causes a crack in the cliff face to enlarge and create a cave
- This cave is formed further by hydraulic action and abrasion
- Over time a arch is formed
- The arch starts to erode and collapse due to hydraulic action, abrasion and biological weathering and creates a stack
- The stack gets attacked at the base by hydraulic action, abrasion, corrosion and biological weathering which breaks them down into stacks.
